Moving to a static site

The interest in my Mastodon guides has put some some strain on my webhost causing pages to load slowly. This motivated me to finally bite the bullet and convert this otherwise only very sporadically updated blog to a static site (using the excellent SimplyStatic tool).

Upsides:

  • No need to run a full PHP stack and a vulnerable WordPress installation (I can still use a private instance to update the site and generate a new build)
  • Pages can be minified and cached more easily by my CDN
  • Much faster page load times and less load on my server

Downsides

  • Losing some interactive functionality (comments, search)

I’ll see if I can retrofit some solutions for these downsides. Enjoy reading!
Update 16/02/2023: Solved some issues with older posts (>5 years ago) that weren’t converted correctly. Enjoy!
